Not only is the walk up the hill totally worth it for the basilica, it’s a goddamned beautiful view. (That domed building rising above the rest of the city is the Duomo.) I mean, seriously. Look at it. I didn’t want to leave. But then someone suggested gelato.
Also oh! those doors! I’ll have some like that in my castle dining room, I think. And hire Aragorn to open and close them dramatically on the hour like a sexy brazen cuckoo clock.

Clearly if I am to achieve any sense of tumblaccomplishment in the future I must aim for fewer arty photos, more unwarranted comments about fitties with beards.

This is the 13th century mosaic inside San Miniato al Monte. A pitiful attempt at capturing shimmering artistry in the dimmest of shadowy light. With the cheapest possible digital camera ever. (To avoid flat light I tried ISO 800 and 1/2s exposure, and you can juuuust about get a tiny idea of how glorious the golden colours are in real life. Except not really.)
San Miniato/Minas is the figure on the right (inscr. S. Miniatus Rex Erminie). I believe I’ve at least one follower with Armenian inclinations…? Wikipedia articles are only so thrilling. And sadly there doesn’t appear to be any cephalophoric hagiography going on in this scene, since, um, Minas clearly still has his head on.
San Miniato al Monte in Florence, one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen.
